Beam of Light I don't know what caused that vertical beam of light. It was visible to my own eyes. Made for a Stunning Sunset today. I used my Sears 135mm lens for this one. I'm really starting to appreciate the 135mm focal length.

on June 20, 2009A stunning photo. The atmospheric optical effect you've captured is a sun pillar or light pillar. Google "sun pillar" and you'll find a number of simple explanations. The link below is to a neat website that provides astronomical POD's, including another example of this effect. It's caused by ice crystals in the air, but you can see it throughout the year, not just in winter. Lucky you to have seen this one.
